The Co-operative College and ASDAN offer a range of accredited programmes for schools which introduce co‑operative studies into the curriculum. The materials provide a progression in co operative education, from ‘Stepping Stones’ for primary students through to the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness through Co operative Studies, a GCSE equivalent qualification at Levels 1, 2 and 3.
The programmes and their supporting co-operative curriculum materials are of particular interest to schools which wish to embed co-operation into their whole-school ethos and develop their students’ awareness and understanding of co operative values. The awards include:
For Key Stage 2:
Stepping Stones – This award is linked to the ‘Co-operate for Change – Fairtrade in Your School’ pack and provides accreditation for activities completed from it.
For Key Stage 3:
Key Steps – Personal Challenges in Co operation – The challenges for this award introduce the concepts of co operation and co-operatives and move on to explore each of the six co-operative values: self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity. Students work in small groups to plan, complete, and review the activities. The challenges will help students to improve their skills in working with others and improve their own learning whilst offering many opportunities to develop research and presentation abilities.
For Key Stages 3 and 4:
Enterprise Award – Young Co-operatives – This award recognises the achievements and learning outcomes of students who have been involved in planning, setting up, running, and evaluating their own ‘Young Co-operative’ school-based enterprise project.
For Key Stages 3, 4 and 5:
Co-operative Citizenship Award – This short course Award provides a fresh approach to citizenship and an ideal way to embed the co-operative values in school, with each module helping students to reflect on one of the six co-operative values and their links to responsible citizenship and the wider world.
For Key Stages 4:
Certificate of Personal Effectiveness through Co-operative Studies – This programme offers the opportunity for a more in-depth exploration of co-operative values and the way in which they can be applied to everyday situations in school and the community.
